Hammock Gear 30° Down Quilt

This is my first top quilt so the review will be updated as I gain more experience with the quilt.  I have to admit I was very hesitant to order a quit since I've been using mummy bags since my boy scout days.  Hammock Gear has become one of my favorite sources for camping gear, the prices are reasonable, the quality top notch and it is made in the USA.  Their ordering process is pretty simple but you do have a lot of choices compared to some other quilts I looked at.  I chose the Premium Borrow (slightly lighter than the standard bag), 55" wide, 950 fill power down, 2 ounces of "overfill" with a sewn footbox and a pad attachment kit.  I have not used it below 40° so far, but on a 43° night while sleeping on my NeoAir Xtherm it was very warm.  The pad attachments work very well, but I probably won't really use them again unless it is really cold.  This is a very high quality, very lightweight (less than 18 ounces) quilt that is also very comfortable.

Highs

  • · Weight, the bag weighed 17.2 ounces with the upgraded down, pad attachments and fully sewn footbox.  This is actually .4 ounces less than they estimated the weight would be!
  • Comfort.  This bag has a taffeta interior and is VERY comfortable with enough width to wrap it around me if needed.
  • · Aesthetics, this is a good looking quilt. There are many color choices to go through.  I chose a black ripstop exterior and dark gray taffeta interior.  The bag looks great in my chosen colors.
  • · Ease of use, this quilt compresses smaller than any of my other bags and has high quality hardware for pad attachments.
  • Quick lofting down, the 950 fill power down seems to loft faster than normal.  Even faster than my REI Magma mummy bag.

Lows

  • I am not sure if this is a low, but it sleeps a little warmer than I expected.  When I ordered this quilt I assumed it would be a great summer option but this quilt is too warm for sleeping above about 50°-55° in my opinion.

I can't recommend Hammock Gear enough, but when you order your quilt you will have a lot of options to decide on.  That is not a drawback but just know it is not like ordering from a big box store, this is a small business that focuses on customer service and everything is made in their shop.  You can choose fill power, to add extra fill, taffeta or ripstop for your exterior, many color options, multiple footbox styles and more.  It appears they have simplified this a little, when I ordered mine you had to choose between the Standard and Premium Burrow, but there are still many options to make it your own!  Check out these great quilts at https://hammockgear.com/ground-quilts/
